Prompt Engineering: why the quality of the instruction changes everything

Having access to a powerful Artificial Intelligence does not, by itself, mean knowing how to use it well.

Two people can use the same AI and receive completely different answers. Very often, the difference lies in how each one structures the instruction.

That is where Prompt Engineering comes in.

A prompt is the instruction given to a generative AI. Prompt Engineering is the use of techniques to help that AI better understand the context, the objective, the criteria and the expected result.

And there are specific techniques for this.

One of them is the definition of a specialty or role, also known as role prompting. Instead of simply asking for an analysis, you can direct it:

Act as a specialist in business contracts and identify risks, penalties, obligations and termination possibilities.

Another technique is role-play, in which the AI takes on a specific role or simulates a situation. For example:

Simulate a meeting between a dissatisfied client and a customer service manager. Identify the client's main objections and suggest how to respond to each one.

There are also structures based on decision trees, in which the AI analyzes different paths before reaching a conclusion.

Imagine a company evaluating a new project. Instead of simply asking whether to execute it, the prompt can determine:

Analyze three possible scenarios: execute now, postpone or abandon the project. For each scenario, evaluate benefits, risks, costs and consequences.

The answer stops being generic and starts to follow a logic of analysis.

with:

Act as a specialist in business contracts. Analyze this document from the contracting party's perspective, identify financial risks, penalties and termination possibilities, and classify each risk as low, medium or high.

It is the same Artificial Intelligence. What changed was the quality of the instruction.

Because AI can do much more than write texts.

With Prompt Engineering, it can be directed to:

There are also other techniques, such as the use of examples, task decomposition, definition of constraints, construction of analysis steps and the creation of specialized prompts for specific activities.

In other words, there is not just one way to ask an AI. There is real engineering behind building instructions capable of increasing the precision, consistency and usefulness of the answers.

Artificial Intelligence is already extremely powerful. Prompt Engineering makes that power be used far more efficiently.

In the end, the difference is not only in which AI your company uses. It is in how well it knows how to use it.
